Barking dogs
Owning a dog in public sector housing requires responsible management, including addressing excessive barking, which can disturb or annoy neighbours. Dogs may bark for various reasons such as:
-
Loneliness
-
Boredom
-
Frustration
-
Attention seeking
-
Defending their territory
-
Medical issues
Tips for Managing Barking:
-
Provide regular affection, exercise and care.
-
Avoid leaving your dog alone for long periods.
-
Identify the reason for the barking and address it through training or by removing triggers. For instance, blocking your dog’s view of outside activities may help.
-
Consult your vet for health checks or referrals to animal behaviour experts if needed.
Replacing a barking dog is usually not a solution; often, lifestyle changes are necessary. While getting another dog for companionship might help, ensure you have the space and resources to care for additional pets. Please remember that you do need the permission of Onchan District Commissioners before introducing another pet to your household.
Reporting Complaints:
If you have concerns about barking dogs, please contact the Department of the Environment, Food and Agriculture.
If you have concerns about the welfare of the animal, please contact the Manx Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
