Home Contents Insurance - Make sure you're covered.
Onchan District Commissioners provide insurance for the structure of the building, but this does not cover your internal decorations or personal belongings. If your home was damaged from incidents like a fire or flood, we will cover necessary repairs to the structure, but not the cost of redecorating.
What this means for you:
- Personal Belongings: Your possessions are not covered by our insurance. You need to insure the contents of your home separately.
- Get Insured: We strongly recommend obtaining contents insurance from a reputable company as soon as possible. This type of insurance protects you against risks like fire, theft and accidental damage. Replacing essential items can be costly.
- What to Cover: Home contents insurance typically covers furniture, household goods, personal items, carpets, jewellery, clothing and even costs for redecoration and replacing broken windows.
- Accommodation Costs: If you must leave your home due to significant damage (like from a fire or flood), your insurance should also cover temporary accommodation expenses. While the Commissioners can assist in finding alternatives, they do not cover these costs directly.
Consider the Risks:
Fire, floods and accidents can lead to significant financial loss. Take a moment to estimate the replacement cost of your belongings– you might surprised by the total. Without insurance, you would be responsible for covering any damage or loss from such events.
Safety Precautions:
Avoid keeping dangerous or inflammable substances in your home, as this may invalidate your insurance. Also, if you plan to be away from home for more than four weeks, please contact the Commissioners by Telephone: (01624) 675564, or email housing@onchan.org.im to ensure our insurance coverage remains intact.
Peace of Mind:
If you do not currently have home contents insurance, we encourage you to consider getting it. It’s a small step that can provide significant peace of mind.
