Residents can collect more grit for personal use from the Civic Amenity Sites, or from the Department of Infrastructure Ellerslie Depot (Tel: 672000).
It is important to know if it then rains, hails or snows after grit has been put down, it is still likely that the road or pavement will re-freeze.
Salt works by lowering the freezing point of water causing ice to melt at a lower temperature than normal. Traffic travelling along the treated routes helps accelerate the thawing process and stops the water refreezing.
Using excessive amounts of salt or re- gritting roads which have already been gritted yield no better results and can lead to increased skid risk.
